The Importance of Being Average

You are very big, to me, but far far away,
And silently exploding every second of every day
You have been consuming yourself
To pour out a wealth of heat and light
Into an endless, frozen, night
That hotplate-warms this cooling rock
Just enough to be able to stock
A host of teaming life.

And they say that you are average:
Standard, G-type, main sequence
Eminating a wide range of terrahertz frequence
Weighing in at one solar mass.
But you define your class
As we swing past
In an endless ellipse
It’s a shock when you’re eclipsed
Or when we’re at a slight lean
The winter winds blow keen
Reminding us of the service you’re providing us.

It will end when you can’t give any more,
When you burn through your store
Of primordial hydrogen
Blast out the elements to coalesce again.
You’re bursting out of your role my friend
The creator and the maker
Will destroy the earth whole
In the birth of a Red Giant
Grow 250 times as violent
And slowly morph
Into a cooling White Dwarf.

So thank you, for being so stable for so long,
8 billion years, I’m not able to stay strong for one!
I vascillate my power, dread to think
What a dead rock on the brink
This would be if it were me
Who held the responsibility to show up every day
For 8 billion years, consistency is your way
Shining light down at a constant simmer,
Not growing too much brighter or dimmer
Despite your achne and wind,
Your temper might flare, but soon rescinds.

Shows we all have a part to play,
It may be that you don’t even know
What you do for us each day
That every culture venerates you
In their own impassioned way,
That we’ve named you
Ekhi, Ra, Apollo, Sol, Surya,
Inti, Mithra, the list goes far
Testament to the importance
Of being who you are.

I don’t want no flash bang blues
Or deep red hues, if I get to choose.
To my Goldilocks eyes,
You’re the perfect size
A mellow yellow that
Lights up the blue skies
As you span an East-West bridge
Showing us the importance of being average.
