Celebrated Beltane in the Southern Hemisphere last weekend, the transition to the energy and light of summer, the shedding of the winter beard and ego.
In the quiet night of a winter street a few months ago, I caught sight of a greenman, staring out at me from the window of a curious little shop. Never had that face been full of such potency for me, until that moment, so far from home, as we stared into one another’s eyes. It’s good to remember your roots:
The Greenman
I saw him
Peering from a dark window
In the moonless night
With the utmost patience
Serene to the endless oscillation
At peace with the march of time.
The Greenman smiled like a seabird
Impassive to the cresting wave
Trusting himself to float
Delegating his endless authority
To everything else
In perfect synergy
The intelligence inherent
In complexity.
In the death and rebirth
In the passion and stillness
The tumbling, clawing, quiet of it,
Howling silently.
I saw him, and he saw me…
I wonder what he saw.
