How to live with a partner

– A community wisdom collage by Whanganui Friends

You’re thinking of moving in together?
Don’t make the same mistakes we did,
There are plenty of your own to find.
Let us give you some friendly advice
To ease your worried mind.

Keep it open, to the fact
That they might not know the things you do
Like how to fry an onion
Or that poached pears need cut in two.

Although clarity of communication
Is pertinent and wise
Best to avoid radical honesty
While sleep closes their eyes.

Have spaces that are yours
To retreat to when you need
And friends that you alone lean on
That’s resilience, not greed.

Ensure you live your own life
While sharing space and time
Cooperation and compromise is key
But respect your felt-sense boundary line
Don’t minimise your own wild authenticity.

Keep the communication open
Have those hard chats when they arise
But balanced with the fun
And big love gazing eyes.
Still, no matter how beautiful
You think they are,
No matter what you say
You may get tired of seeing their face
Every. Single. Day!

But people change and people grow
We are contextual creatures
Ensure you grow together
With walking, talking speeches
Sharing who you are in this moment,
And listen to the ‘them right now’
Don’t assume you know them through
Or feel ‘holier-than-thou’.

Find your connective activity
Something more than epic sex
Something you only do together
And enjoy the good effects.

Good luck kourua, your community is here to awhi you <3
